to hike above treeline in winter is to understand the calculus of risk and reward. to weigh the potential reward against the risk, and to make the appropriate decision, hoping that your math is correct!

on this particular day, the risk was evident: bitter cold temps and sub-zero wind chill, right in the parking lot. even worse up on the summits.

equally clear was the reward: crystal clear air and cloudless skies. views for miles and miles in all directions.

an unforgettable experience. we had the right gear, and the ability, and we were both willing to change our original plans and go up high instead. it was so worth it. thanks michael.
